The Wisconsin Phosphorus Index (P Index) is a runoff phosphorus loss risk assessment tool for cropland management planning. It uses information that is readily available to farmers and agricultural consultants to evaluate the potential for phosphorus in runoff from a specific field entering a nearby stream. The P Index currently has two types of uses:
Nutrient management planning:
The P Index is one of the tools used for planning manure phosphorus applications according to Wisconsin Nutrient Management Standard 590 (PDF) (September 5, 2005).Water quality improvement planning:
It can be used to determing where the major sources of phosphorus (P) are on the landscape. It also shows why these areas are problems, and can lead the planner to practices most likely to solve the problem.Field P Index values are calculated using the SNAP-Plus nutrient management and soil loss assessment software program.
